8.7 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Russia; Tsunami Warning Issued

Kamchatka, Russia: A powerful earthquake has hit Russia’s far east coast on Tuesday night, prompting Tsunami warning in the Pacific ocean. The earthquake recorded a magnificent 8.7 magnitude. Earlier, it was reported that the magnitude was 8.0, which was later revised up.

Following the dangerous earthquake, the US geological survey has issued Tsunami advisory for areas that include Alaska. Other regions such as Japan and Pacific coasts have also been issued warnings.

Notably, around 3 to 4 metre tsunami waves recorded in Kamchatka region, and the evacuation is underway in Severo-Kurilsk areas. Videos show violent shaking inside buildings, with several damages reported at multiple locations. A video shared on social media platform X showed the walls of the Rodnichok kindergarten collapsed following the natural calamity. However, no casualties have been reported from the building as there were no children present at the time, and the building was purportedly under repair.

 

The quake’s epicenter is some 85 miles (136 kilometers) east of Petropavlovsk in the country’s Kamchatka peninsula, at a depth of 12 miles (19 kilometers), as per reports.

Weather agency in Japan has also issued warnings that a tsunami up to 1 meter (3.28 feet) high could reach large coastal areas of Japan. The government has set up an emergency committee to gather information and plan the response.

After the magnificent 8.7 magnitude earthquake, a magnitude 6.9 aftershock hit 147 kilometres southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. US president Donald Trump urged people to stay strong and safe while warning those living in Hawaii about potential Tsunami due to the massive earthquake.

 

 

India Consulate General in San Francisco alerted its citizens, saying it is monitoring the potential Tsunami threat, while issuing steps to be followed. It urged people to carefully monitor local alerts including emergency management and the US Tsunami warnings Centre, and directed to move to higher ground if Tsunami warning is issued.
