US Presidential aspirant, Vivek Ramaswamy continuing with his stringent policy proposals, said that he would end birthright citizenship to children of illegal migrants in the US. “I favour ending birthright citizenship for the kids of illegal immigrants in this country,” he said.
He made this statement while attending the second Republican debate of the 2024 election cycle, held at Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Simi Valley, California on Wednesday. Besides Mr Ramaswamy, North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, former Vice President Mike Pence, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina were also present in the debate.
When Mr. Ramaswamy was asked what “legal premise” would use to expel illegal immigrants and their American-born children from the country, he began by saying that he supports everything the Right has on the issue, he would like go a “step further” by ending birthright citizenship to illegal migrant’s kids. “Now, the left will howl about the Constitution and the 14th Amendment. The difference between me and them is I”ve actually read the 14th Amendment. What it says is that all persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the laws and jurisdiction thereof are citizens. So nobody believes that the kid of a Mexican diplomat in this country enjoys birthright citizenship.”
Adding further, Mr. Ramaswamy, son of Indian immigrants, said: “The children of undocumented immigrants born in the United States should not be granted citizenship, because their parents broke of law to be in the country.”
Then he added that as a father of two sons it is hard for him to tell his children that follow the law, when the government itself fails to follow it.
Mr. Ramaswamy, who is known for his shocking and radical statements is following the similar hardline political stance of former US President Donald Trump.
