Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) President Hails India’s Higher Education Progress

Nunzio Quacquarelli, the President at Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a major international university ranking platform, shared an analysis of the Indian higher education system under the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject published on April 10, 2024, on his LinkedIn profile. The analysis of the Indian education system is a part of the series of analyses of the global education system by Quacquarelli.

QS is the world’s leading provider of services, analytics, and insight to the global higher education sector whose mission is to enable motivated people anywhere in the world to fulfill their potential through educational achievement, international mobility, and career development. Notably, the QS analysis covered over 1,500+ universities in 96 countries, showcasing excellence in 55 academic subjects and five faculty areas.

Congratulating Indian universities, administrators, faculty, and students who have worked tirelessly to achieve these remarkable results, the QS president underscored the bright future of the Indian higher education system.

As per Quacquarelli, this year, Indian universities demonstrated the highest performance improvement among all G20 nations with an average 14% year-on-year improvement in their ranking. In terms of research output, India has become one of the world’s most rapidly expanding research centers. From 2017 to 2022, its research output surged by an impressive 54%, making it the world’s fourth-largest producer of research, he added.

Emphasizing the role of the newly launched National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the QS president mentioned that India’s higher education progress on the global stage has undoubtedly been aided by visionary policies such as the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Nunzio Quacquarelli highlighted that subject rankings show that the high learning targets are beginning to manifest in the significant presence and enhanced performance of Indian universities.

Key Highlights

India ranks prominently in 44 out of the 55 QS Subject Rankings. Standout performances were noted in Computer Science, Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Business Studies, and Physics, among others.

The Institutes of Eminence (IoE) contributed 47 of the 69 Indian university positions within the top 100 in any of the Subject Rankings.

Across Asia, India now holds the second-highest number of featured universities in the QS Subject Rankings, behind China.

QS Ranking 2024

Ranked 20th globally, Jawahar Lal Nehru University has emerged as the top university in India for Development Studies and is a recent addition to this field. Additionally, the university also ranked 11th in academic reputation. This is the 14th edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024. It highlights the substantial progress of universities in the academic domain.

This year a total of 69 Indian universities were made into the list. Universities either showed improvement or have maintained their positions on the list. As per the ranking, the next two highest-ranked universities are Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences (deemed to be a university), which came in at number 24 in the world for dentistry and is the only Indian university to receive a perfect score (100/100) in one of the QS indicators, specifically the H Index, which ranks first in this metric. The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) – Ahmedabad debuted in the 22nd position for Business & Management Studies.

Six Indian universities have been spotted among the world’s top 10 for employer reputation in specific subjects including Symbiosis International, IIT Bombay, and IIT Madras among others. The National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education & Research is the top Indian institution in terms of research effect in the field of pharmacy and pharmacology, ranking remarkably high at 64th position.
