IIM Ahmedabad Launches Elective Course On Real Estate Under MBA Programs

Edited by Uzma Parveen

IIM Ahmedabad (IIMA) has launched courses on real estate in the form of an elective offered under its MBA programs. The institution has launched four elective courses in the real estate domain under its well-subscribed programs. IIM Bangalore is already offering elective courses on real estate.

IIMA will provide programs including 1-year MBA-PGPX, 2-year MBA-PGP, and 2-year MBA-FABM courses to produce top-quality real estate specialists through core and elective courses. At the IIM Ahmedabad campus, the courses are being offered by Prof Prashant Das and Prof Abhiman Das.

An elective course is different from the core course which is mandatory under the program. These elective courses are provided to students to choose from a list of courses as complementary to the core program. The Real Estate courses are designed to support a career in property management, real estate brokerage, investment analysis, and development planning. This helps in equipping with the skills to navigate and succeed in the dynamic real estate market.

In India, some other institutions including CEPT University, NICMAR University, RICS School of Build Environment, and NMIMS also offer real estate undergraduate and postgraduate programs. It is noted that the availability of higher education falls short of to fill the gap in the courses demand.

The new course at IIM Ahmedabad is an extension arm of ASG (Alpha Sigma Gamma of American Real Estate Society). The professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and President of ASG, Stephanie R. Yales, anticipated the bolstering of real estate education in India and information about the many opportunities linked to this field. While talking about the future career prospects of joining this course she emphasized that those who earn this distinction will become a part of an elite group of real estate professionals.

Reportedly, there are nearly 900 real estate programs both for undergraduate and postgraduate courses by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) in the UK alone.

RICS accredits programs in Australia (120), Singapore (8), and Hong Kong (61). The Urban Land Institute lists nearly 90 universities globally (60 in the US alone) that offer real estate programs or specializations.

The world’s top universities including MIT, Harvard University, Wharton, Stanford, and UC Berkeley, all have real estate programs up to PhD levels.

Notably, India’s premier management institute has also come up with a solution to working professionals who have been finding it difficult to manage time for their continuing education. Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad or IIMA announced the launch of its new two-year blended Master of Business Administration or MBA programme – a degree-granting post-graduate programme designed for working professionals and entrepreneurs who seek to strike a balance between the pressures of their work life and their professional aspirations.

The Online MBA programme, according to a statement from the top-ranking management institute, is a blended (hybrid) programme that combines on-campus, in-person sessions and live interactive online sessions.
