The Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) has not recruited any faculty members belongs to Schedule Tribe (ST) category, from January 2021 to June 2023, despite the provision of special drive to recruit persons from the reserved categories. According to the data revealed under an RTI application filed by a social activist, IIMB disclosed the 585 members from Unreserved Category (UR), 125 people from Schedule Caste (SC) category and 39 candidates from Schedule Tribe (ST) applied for employment during this period.
25 candidates in total—23 from the UR category and 2 from the SC category—were granted offer letters. Candidates in the ST category did not receive an offer letter. In addition, out of 223 OBC candidates 8 joined IIMB. However, applicants from the Person with Disability (PwD) category and Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) were also not given any employment offers by IIMB.
According to the data based on voluntary disclosure at IIMB, among the current faculty members, 10 belong to OBC category, 5 to the SC category and 1 to the ST category. When asked about the same, IIMB responded that the recruitment process is “structured with adequate and robust checks and balances to ensure inclusion”. “The Institute follows the Government of India’s reservation policy for the candidates belonging to OBC/SC/ST/PwD/EWS.
Under an official statement, IIMB added the IIM Bangalore’s commitment to increase the social diversity of management academia in India has been demonstrated through the launch of NSR Pre-doc programme, 2018, which clearly reflects their intent for the larger management ecosystem. According to the official statements, IIM Bangalore is the only IIM to launch such an initiative and commit significant resources to it.
