Edited by Hiba Anvar

After narrowly escaping from child marriage, bravely fighting against all odds, G Nirmala topped the intermediate examinations this year in Andhra Pradesh. Nirmala, a resident of Peddaharivanam village in Adoni mandal has topped the examination by securing 421 out of 440 marks.

The young girl had earlier passed the class 10 exams by scoring 537 marks. However, being unable to pay for her higher education, her parents planned to marry her off. According to the Times of India, her parents convinced her by expressing their difficulty in funding her for her education.

But Nirmala, who was determined to pursue her educational goals in life approached the local YSRP legislator Y Saiprasad Reddy during the latter’s “Gadapa Gadapaku Mana Prabhuvatam” program last year with a plea to help her in pursuing her goals in life.

The Adoni MLA who was moved by the plight of the young girl informed the situation to the district collector G Srujana who in turn intervened. Initially, they rescued the girl from the imminent child marriage.

The district administration then got her admission to Kasturba Gandhi Balikala Vidyalaya at Aspari. She then braved against all odds to reach the toppers list in this year’s intermediate examinations. While speaking to the reporters, Nirmala said that she aspires to become an IPS officer and will work towards the abolition of child marriages and help girls like her in pursuing their dreams. Nirmala’s journey serves as an inspiration to countless others facing similar struggles. Her remarkable achievement is a testament to her unwavering resolve and commitment to her education.
