BJP Candidate Tejasvi Surya Booked For “Soliciting Votes On The Ground Of Religion”

Edited by Fathimathu Shana

BJP candidate Tejasvi Surya found himself amidst controversy as he was booked for violation of election code of conduct. He was for seeking votes on religious grounds. Allegedly, the sitting MP of Bengaluru South posted a video on his X (formerly twitter) account where he purportedly sought votes for the ongoing Lok Sabha election on religious grounds.

The Chief Electoral Officer of Karnataka took to his X account and said that, “case is booked against Tejasvi Surya MP and candidate of Bengaluru South PC on 25.04.24 at Jayanagar PS u/s 123(3) for posting a video in ‘X’ handle and soliciting votes on the ground of religion”. The section 123(3) of the Representation of People Act prohibits candidates from seeking votes using religious symbols.

In a series of appeal, the BJP MP urged voters to take part in the electoral process. Reportedly, he referenced Ram Mandir, border security, and Article 370. In a post, he said, “Our generation was blessed to witness the majestic Surya Tilak on Bhagwan Shri Ram at Ayodhya on Ram Navami. A wait for almost 500 years & a wish of crores of Bharatiyas was fulfilled by PM Shri @narendramodi Ji. For Bharatiyata to survive, vote for BJP!”
