BJP Fields Kaleram Majhi To Wrest Congress Stronghold Koraput

BJP has fielded Kaleram Majhi from the Koraput Lok Sabha Constituency to run for the upcoming parliamentary elections. Whereas, Congress fields Saptgiri Sankar Ulaka against Majhi in Koraput. The date of voting for the Koraput Lok Sabha Constituency election 2024 is May 13, 2024.

Kaliram Majhi, the BJP candidate expressed confidence and cited a growing discontent among the public against the Congress candidate in the Koraput constituency. While filing the nomination from Koraput nearly 20,000 people accompanied Majhi with drum beats and vibrant tribal dances. During his election campaign, Majhi appeals to tribal communities to bring socio-economic changes and development.

In the last parliamentary elections in 2019, Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka won elections by securing 371129 votes (34%). Ulaka defeated Biju Janata Dal (BJD) candidate Kausalya Hikaka with a small margin of 3613 votes. The total voter turnout in the constituency was 75.34%.

Koraput is comprised of 7 assembly regions: Gunupur, Bissam Cuttack, Rayagada, Lakshmipur, Jeypore, Korapur, and Pottangi constituencies. The 4 of the Koraput assembly seats were won by the BJD in the last elections. However, on the Parliamentary seat, Congress candidates have consecutively won since 1957.

Koraput Lok Sabha constituency is an ST category parliament seat and comprises part of Koraput district and the entire Rayagarha district. The literacy rate in the constituency is very low with only 41.59% population literate. The ST constitutes the majority of the population in Koraput with 52.92%. SC and Muslims form 14.29% and 1.8% of the total population of the constituency.

The Lok Sabha election result 2024 will be announced on June 4, 2024.
