Agnimithra Paul, fashion designer turned politician who has served as the Member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly from Asansol South will contest the Lok Sabha election as the BJP candidate from the Medinipur constituency. Agnimithra is also the President of West Bengal BJP Mahila Morcha.

Feilding Paul has earlier created some grievances among the BJP workers. On the other hand, her opposition candidate Malia, who had a successful Bengal film career is one of TMC’s strong candidates.

The BJP’s state heavyweight Dilip Ghosh, won the 2019 Lok Sabha election. But this party has decided to shift Ghosh to Asansol and fielded Paul in the Medinipur. Though it has triggered discontent among the BJP workers, the rally by Prime minister Narendra Modi boosted the confidence of Paul.

Before the 2019 Lok Sabha election, she joined the BJP and ever since then, Paul has been a common face in every women-led agitation of the BJP including the one in Sandeshkhali.

Paul as a fashion designer has designed costumes for films such as Koi Mere Dil Se Poocha and Via Darjeeling. Paul started her fashion label ‘Inga’ across India and has also designed for the Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2013.

Medinipur Lok Sabha constituency is one of the few parliamentary constituencies in West Bengal that will witness a four-cornered contest. The constituency is famous for producing many freedom fighters such as Khudiram Bose and Matangini Hazra, social reforms like Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, and patrons of art like Sisir Kumar Bhaduri.

The Medinipur Lok Sabha constituency consists of seven assembly segments. Six of them are in Paschim Medinipur district and one is in Purba Medinipur district.

Medinipur constituency will vote on May 25 in the sixth phase of the Lok Sabha election.
