Kuldeep Rai Sharma: Will His Parliamentary Credentials Secure A Second Term From Andaman And Nicobar Islands?

Edited by Kabani R

Kuldeep Rai Sharma is the incumbent Congress MP representing the Andaman and Nicobar Islands constituency. In the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls, he is seeking a second term.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Kuldeep Rai Sharma defeated BJP candidate Vishal Jolly by a narrow margin of 1407 votes. It was his fourth attempt to reach the parliament, and he came out victorious in 2019.

Besides being a parliamentarian, the Congress leader has held positions such as President of the Andaman and Nicobar Territorial Congress Committee and secretary in charge of the Congress in Karnataka. In 2020, UNICEF awarded him the PGC Awards for his work to protect child rights.

Kuldeep Rai Sharma has received the Sansad Ratna Award, one of the notable awards given to outstanding parliamentarians, for the third consecutive time in 2024. It was in due recognition of his contribution for the betterment of people in the constituency, his active participation in parliamentary debates, and his professionalism and discipline as a parliamentarian. The sources told NDTV that MP has raised the issues of the creation of the Andaman and Nicobar Service Commission, the building of an alternate highway along the coastline, the construction of a bridge from Minnie Bay to Mithakhari, and the launch of the Udaan scheme in the islands.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands constituency witness a tight contest between Congress and the BJP. Since Congress MP’s victory in the last elections was by a small margin, will he maintain the supremacy or will the BJP wrest the constituency from Congress hands?
