Saayoni Ghosh Is On TMC Ticket From Jadavpur

Edited by Uzma Parveen

The Mamata Banerjee-led-Trinamool Congress (TMC) gave a ticket to actor-politician Saayoni Ghosh from the Jadavpur Constituency in West Bengal. She is one of the 42 candidates fielded by the TMC in West Bengal.

The announcement came after Mimi Chakraborty stepped down from her position as a TMC MP and submitted her resignation. Gosh was fielded by the TMC from the Asansol south constituency during the 2021 West Bengal Vidhan Sabha election. However, she lost the poll to BJP candidate Agnimitra Paul by a margin of 4480 votes. The ‘Aparajito’ famed actor turned politician is the president of Yuva Trinamool with no registered criminal cases in her name.

Back in 2015, Saayoni Gosh sparked controversy with her social media post for insulting the religious sentiments of people when she posted a ‘Shivalinga’ picture with a condom over it. However, she later issued an apology and alleged that her account was hacked and the hacker posted the image. BJP leader Tathagata Roy filed an FIR against the actress for posting the picture.

Reportedly, Saayoni has started her political campaign and shared a picture online where Saayoni can be seen pouring water on Shiva’s head. The caption reads, “I am overwhelmed to start the day with puja at the neighborhood temple and the blessings and spontaneous love from everyone in the neighborhood…’

TMC has fielded a former actress again from the constituency, however, Jadavpur seat is unique in terms of giving an opportunity to academicians to win since 1977, except twice – in 1984 to Mamata Banerjee and Mimi Chakraborty in 2019. Whereas, BJP fielded Dr Anirban Ganguly the scholar turned politician to run for election for the upcoming Lok Sabha from the Jadavpur constituency.

Jadavpur is considered as West Bengal’s one of the most challenging Lok Sabha seats. MPs from different political parties including CPI (M), Congress, and TMC have been elected from this seat and it has continued to vote alternately in the last four decades. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and former Lok Sabha speaker Somnath Chatterjee have also won elections from Jadavpur.
