Audi Q9 7-Seat SUV To Debut In 2026 After Seven Years Of Work

Ahead of its anticipated launch next year, Audi is testing the future Q9 seven-seat SUV in close-to-production configuration. The appearance and dimensions of Audi’s upcoming flagship SUV are hinted at by previously released spy photos of a Q9 test mule.

The Q9 appears to have a much longer wheelbase and rear overhang than the next-generation Q7 spy photos from last year, suggesting more room in the second and third rows. Although a seven-seat arrangement is anticipated for the Q9, a six-seat arrangement, such to that found in the Bentley Bentayga, is also feasible.

With a big hexagon-patterned grille on the front end that is flanked by a split headlamp configuration and a wide air dam with similar hexagonal pieces lower down on the bumper, the Q9’s appearance largely reflects that of the next-generation Q7. A lightbar that spans the width of the Q9 and a roof spoiler are located on the back. The test mule also has quad exhaust tips, indicating that a sportier SQ9 version is being developed.

The Q9 is anticipated to leverage an extended version of Volkswagen’s new Premium Platform Combustion (PPC), which can accommodate longitudinally mounted powertrains ranging from 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engines all the way through to V8 units.

Given that Audi is reevaluating its ICE car launch plans due to a slowdown in EV adoption and the company’s investment in hybrid powertrains, it is likely that all Q9 models will be powered by plug-in hybrid configurations. The Q9, which is scheduled to go on sale in 2026, will be the top SUV in Audi’s lineup in countries like the US, UK, China, and the UAE. The Mercedes-Benz GLS, Range Rover, and BMW X7 are among of the Q9’s competitors. This car is going to be a ready reckoner for those who were eagerly waiting for the Q9 to be launched.

The Audi Q9 is set to become the brand’s new flagship SUV, offering a spacious seven-seat layout and a premium design. Built on Volkswagen’s PPC platform, it will feature plug-in hybrid powertrains to balance performance and efficiency. Expected to debut in 2026, the Q9 will compete with luxury SUVs like the BMW X7, Mercedes-Benz GLS, and Range Rover.
