BYD Yangwang U8 PHEV SUV Showcased; Can Sprint 0-100kph In 3.2 Seconds

The flagship U8 SUV from BYD’s premium brand Yangwang was on display at the current Bharat Mobility Global Expo. The four-wheeler is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) with a longer range. Only electric cars (EVs) are part of BYD India’s lineup; the company may employ Yangwang models to diversify its holdings.

The U8 PHEV, which weighs around 3,500 kg, is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine that powers a generator and a 49.1kWh battery that powers four motors. In eighteen minutes, it can be juiced up from thirty to eighty percent. The 0-100 kph sprint takes 3.2 seconds, and the output is rated at 1,180 horsepower and 1,280 Nm. Yangwang asserts that the U8 has a 1,000 km combined range. However, the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC) indicates that the electric-only range is 180 km.

The five-seater SUV is enormous, measuring 5,319mm in length, 2,050mm in width, and 1,930mm in height, and it is built on a 3,050mm wheelbase. To put it in perspective, it is bigger than a Mercedes-Benz GLS or a Range Rover. The U8 seems bold up front and has a boxy design. The grille is covered with pixel-like patterns that mix in perfectly with the lighting. The U8’s squared-out wheel arches are finished in a gloss-black, slab-sided shape. There are several horizontal strakes that provide accents to the rear quarter window region. The SUV’s door handles are flush to improve aerodynamics.

The U8’s cockpit features a 12.8-inch central touchscreen in addition to a 23.6-inch driver’s display and a front passenger screen, per the worldwide specifications. On top of the dashboard, which has a lovely waterfall look, are the AC vents. A 50W wireless charging pad, a sunroof, a 22-speaker system, brown leather upholstery, motorised ventilated and massaging front seats, and electrically deployable side stairs are among the other amenities.

Since the Yangwang U8 features differential steering, which we have seen in the Mercedes G-Class electric, it can also execute a tank turn. With the help of 38 sensors, three LiDAR sensors, 13 cameras, and 12 ultrasonic radars, a Level 2 ADAS suite ensures safety. Whether BYD will be introducing the U8 PHEV has not been verified. If launched, it will rival SUVs like the Land Rover Range Rover, BMW X7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS.
