Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has entered the auto market by unveiling its first-ever electric car on December 28. Beijing-based Xiaomi”s Chief Executive Lei Jun took to the stage in Beijing to unveil the sedan, dubbed the SU7, with the SU short for Speed Ultra. The SU7 series is scheduled to roll out in China in 2024.

By entering the auto market, China”s Xiaomi is aiming to become a global automotive powerhouse despite fierce competition. Xiaomi, the world”s fourth-largest smartphone manufacturer, revealed its big ambitions in autos in 2021. The company is also positioning its first EV as a formidable contender against leading brands in this sector. The new SU7, which will arrive in two variants, will be equipped with software and electronics from Xiaomi. As per Xiaomi, the SU7 reaches 0-100 km/h in 5.28 seconds, and the Xiaomi SU7 Max can go from 0-100 km/h in 2.78 seconds. Notably, the top speed of the SU7Max is 265 km/h and the SU7 is 210 km/h.

The SU7 has a driving range of up to 668 km on a single charge, and on the other hand, the SU7 Max promises a range of up to 800 km. The top variant is equipped with a 101Kwh CATL Integrated Battery Technology. The SU7 Max also supports super-fast charging, which has the power to achieve 220km in 5 minutes and 510km in 15 minutes. These electric cars will be available in Aqua Blue, Mineral Gray, and Verdant Green colors. Xiaomi has included all the modern smart EV functions in its electric car. However, Xiaomi has not yet revealed the pricing of the SU7 series. The cars will be produced by BAIC Group in a Beijing factory with an annual capacity of 200,000 vehicles.

During the launch event, Xiaomi Chief Executive Lei Jun said that the company will become one of the world”s top 5 automakers by working hard over the next 15 to 20 years. Lei Jun also added that the autonomous driving capabilities of Xiaomi cars would be at the forefront of the industry. Xiaomi”s SU7 series is all set to compete with Tesla and BYD in the Chinese as well as international auto markets.
