Confident Group Chairman CJ Roy Dies by Suicide During Raid In Bengaluru
CJ Roy, the 57-year-old chairman of the Confident Group, a prominent real estate firm in South India, has died after reportedly shooting himself during an Income Tax raid at his office in central Bengaluru. The incident, which unfolded on Friday, January 30, 2026, has sent ripples through business and real estate circles.
According to police and preliminary investigations, Roy sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head inside his chamber at the Confident Group’s office near Richmond Circle on Langford Road.
Sources told media houses that Income Tax officials were conducting searches and examining documents when Roy allegedly took the extreme step in their presence. He was rushed to Narayana Hospital in HSR Layout for urgent medical attention, but succumbed to his injuries despite efforts by doctors.
The tragedy appears linked to ongoing scrutiny faced by Confident Projects (India) Pvt Ltd, the group’s flagship entity.
The company, which has predominant presence in Kerala and Karnataka, has been embroiled in prolonged tax litigation with the Income Tax Department, involving disputes over assessments heard in the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal and Karnataka High Court.
Fresh raids were reportedly underway today, adding to the pressure on Roy, who arrived at the Richmond Road office in the afternoon.
Eyewitness accounts and official statements confirm that officials immediately alerted police and arranged for Roy’s transfer to hospital. Bengaluru police have sealed the site and launched a probe into the circumstances, including the weapon—a pistol—used in the act. A post-mortem examination is expected to provide further clarity on the cause of death, with forensic teams analysing the scene.
The Confident Group, known for its ventures in real estate and construction, has issued an official statement and it said: “Our beloved leader has departed from us, but not from the path he showed us. The lessons he imparted, the values he lived by, and the vision he entrusted to us will continue to guide our journey forward. We will surely reach the destiny he dreamed of, carrying his ideals in every step we take. He was our confidence, our courage, and our strength. In his presence, we found direction; in his words, we found purpose. The entire Confident Group family mourns the sudden and irreparable loss of our beloved Chairman, Dr. Roy C J. May his noble soul rest in eternal peace.
Roy, a key figure in Karnataka’s property sector, leaves behind a legacy marred by these legal battles.
His passion for luxury extended to a staggering collection of high-end sports cars, including 11 Rolls-Royces, treated as savvy investments that appreciated multifold. Roy’s charisma drove him into entertainment, producing big-budget Malayalam films like Casanovva (starring Mohanlal), Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea, and Mein Hoom Moosa, mirroring his larger-than-life persona.
He was family-oriented yet extravagant, he shared his wealth with wife Liny and children Rohit and Ria, blending business acumen with youthful zeal—until his tragic suicide on Friday.
