Bengaluru, Karnataka: Narayana Murthy, the co-founder of Infosys, is again making headlines with his views on work-life balance as he reiterated that he doesn’t believe in the concept of balancing work and personal life while speaking at the CNBC Global Leadership Summit on Friday.

In fact, he’s proud to say that he’s worked hard all his life and has no intention of changing his opinion. Murthy expressed his disappointment when India shifted from a six-day work week to a five-day work week in 1986.

He stated that with Prime Minister Narendra Modi working 100 hours a week, Indians should follow suit to show their appreciation for the country’s progress.

For him, hard work is the key to India’s development, and there’s no alternative to putting in long hours. He said, during the summit, “In India, there is no alternative to hard work. You have to work very hard even if you are smart. I am proud of having worked hard all my life. So I’m sorry I have not changed my view, I will take this opinion to the grave.”

Earlier in 2023, he said that he used to be in the office at 6:20 am & leave the office at 8:30 & work 6 days a week.

However, not everyone agrees with Murthy’s views. His previous comments on Indians needing to work 70 hours a week for steady development sparked a social media debate on work-life balance and mental health.

Some startup founders, like Bhavish Aggarwal of Ola, agree with Narayana Murthy, saying it’s not about burnout but dedication. However, others think that productivity isn’t just about working longer hours but also about upskilling, having a positive work environment, and fair pay.

Radhika Gupta, CEO of Edelweiss Mutual Fund, pointed out that many Indian women have been working long hours without complaining, building India, and raising the next generation.

Senior Journalist Swati Chaturvedi slammed Murthy as she stated on X: “Someone please make this Uber annoying uncle Prez. He won’t stop campaigning till then. Murthy also praised “hard working Modi.”
