July 31st marked a record of 69.92 lakh ITRs filed at the peak time submission of 5.07 lakh between 7 PM and 8 PM.

The Income Tax Department appreciated taxpayers for their cooperation and compliance which helped to hit a record high in Income Tax Return (ITR) filings. According to the Income Tax Department, more than  7.28 crore ITRs have been filed till 31st of July 2024 witnessing a 7.5 per cent surge from the 6.77 crore for the 2023-24 Assessment Year (AY).

It was noted that over 72 per cent chose the New Tax Regime filing 5.27 crore ITRs compared to the 2.01 crore under the Old Tax Regime. July 31st marked a record of 69.92 lakh ITRs filed at the peak time submission of 5.07 lakh between 7 PM and 8 PM. The Helpdesk team has handled about 10.64 lakh queries on the Income Tax filings.

Over 3.2 crore people were logged in on 31st July 2024 and about 58.57 lakh ITRs were gathered from the debutant filers it shows a widening of the tax base. ITR-3 and ITR-5 have been released in previous years as ITR-1, ITR-2, ITR-4 and ITR-6 are available now as it was introduced in April 2024.

The department has carried out an initiative on social media to encourage taxpayers to file their ITRs early. The department stated that there are a lot of undertakings provided to make people learn about new as well as old tax regimes.

Further resolutions were provided to ORM on the X platform as the department handled over 1.07 lakh emails between April and July 2024 resolving 99.97 per cent of issues and concerns.

The team has introduced creative social media campaigns posted on different platforms and about 12 vernacular languages including apart from English and Hindi to reach out to people in every nook and corner of the country via digital platforms.
