India To Export 75,000 Tons of Non-Basmati Rice to UAE
India has decided to export 75,000 tons of non-basmati white rice to the UAE, waiving the export ban. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) informed on Monday that the export to the UAE will be allowed through National Cooperatives Exports Limited (NCEL).
India had banned the export of non-basmati white rice in a bid to meet domestic needs, which were dented by erratic monsoon and supply problems. This led to high inflation in the country.
However, the government has been exporting non-basmati rice and other grains to vulnerable countries to meet food security needs. India had allowed exports of 3 lakh tonnes of wheat to Nepal on July 21 and 14,184 tonnes to Bhutan.
The country also exported non-basmati rice to Bhutan (79,000 tonnes), Mauritius (14,000 tonnes), and Singapore (50,000 tonnes) through the National Cooperative Exports Ltd (NCEL).
Similarly, the Indian government also exported broken rice to Senegal (5 lakh tonnes), Gambia (5 lakh tonnes), Indonesia (2 lakh tonnes), Mali (1 lakh tonnes), and Bhutan (48,804 tonnes).
“The Government of India has the commitment that in case of food insecure, vulnerable countries and neighboring countries request, it will provide with the required quantity of rice or wheat,” Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) Santosh Kumar Sarangi said.
Being the largest rice exporter, India”s export curbs on parboiled and basmati had rattled the world rice market as the cost of the rice became exorbitant.
