New Delhi: The Indian Railway has reportedly decided to increase passenger train fares effective from July 1, 2025. The passenger fare for non-AC Mail/Express trains will be hiked by 1 paise per kilometer, while the fare hike for AC classes will be 2 paise per kilometre, The Economic Times reported, citing government sources.

The hike will be half paise per kilometre for a distance above 500 kilometers. Notably, there will be no hike in fares for monthly season tickets, suburban tickets and also for second-class travel for 500 kilometers of travel.

The fare hike marks the first since 2020, when the railway increased prices during Covid-19.

As per the revised fare, there will be no hike on ordinary second class coaches up to 500 km. For distances beyond 500 km in ordinary second class, the fare will increase by half a paise per kilometre.

The Indian Railway last month mandated requiring Aadhaar authentication for Tatkal train ticket bookings starting July 1, 2025. In a notification, the Railway stated that with effect from 01-07-2025, tickets under the Tatkal scheme can be booked through the website of Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC)/ its app only by Aadhaar-authenticated users.

By July 15, travellers will be required to complete an additional step of Aadhaar-based OTP authentication whilst booking tatkal tickets, as per the new directive. The new guidelines established limitations on Tatkal ticket reservations for authorized booking agents of Indian Railways.

Such representatives are now barred from booking first-day Tatkal tickets within the initial half-hour window.
