Karnataka Girl Samaira Hullur Becomes Pilot at 18

Breaking barriers and soaring high, Samaira Hullur from Vijayapura, Karnataka, has achieved an extraordinary milestone by becoming one of India’s youngest commercial pilots at just 18 years old. Her remarkable journey into the skies began with a chance helicopter ride at the Bijapur Utsav, where the young girl was captivated by the allure of the pilot’s uniform and cockpit controls. From that day, her dream took flight.

Samaira’s parents, Ameen Hullur, an interior designer, and her mother, a fashion designer and teacher, wholeheartedly supported her ambition, saving diligently to enrol her in top-notch aviation academies. Her training commenced at the Vinod Yadav Aviation Academy (VYAA) in New Delhi before advancing to Carver Aviation Academy in Baramati, Maharashtra. Over 18 months, she mastered six rigorous aviation exams and clocked over 200 hours of flight time, a feat that earned her a commercial pilot licence.

Her mentors, Captain Tapesh Kumar and Vinod Yadav, were instrumental in her success. Samaira fondly recalls their guidance, crediting them for nurturing her skills and discipline. At 17, she cleared five out of six theory exams but had to wait until her 18th birthday to tackle the radio transmission technology paper, the final hurdle.

Samaira’s achievements shine even brighter against the backdrop of North Karnataka’s educational challenges for girls. As Omkar Kakade, head of Journalism at Karnataka Akka Mahadevi Women’s University, put it, “Her story will inspire more girls to pursue bold and unconventional careers. Her parents’ unwavering support sets a powerful example.”

Her alma mater, Carver Aviation Academy, celebrated her success with a heartfelt message: “Samaira Hullur’s journey from Vijayapura to the skies is a testament to determination and breaking boundaries. She proves that passion and hard work have no age limits.”
