Farmers March: Delhi's Traffic Likely To Hit As Police Tighten Security In Border

India’s farmers community begin fresh protest march to Delhi in the continuation of their lingering demonstrations demanding legal guarantee to Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops, debt waiver, pension for farmers and labourers, among others.

As farmers have moved to the border, police have stepped up security in Haryana and Punjab borders of the New Delhi. A traffic snurl is also expected in parts of the national capital due to the security arrangements at the border.

Police have set up seven layers of barricading, including a wall, iron nails, barbed wires, wire mesh and traffic barricades with wheels. The security personnel have also increased their strength, reports Indian Express.

Signaling their decision to continue their strike, farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher suggested a prolonged agitation. He said the march has entered its 297th day, and the indefinite hunger strike at the Khanauri border has reached its 11th day, adding that a group of 101 farmers would move towards Delhi from Shambu border.

The march is the latest and a continuation of the earlier demonstrations that began in 2021 when the central government declared three farm laws. The protest proved fruitful when the government surrendered before the farmers, repealing all three laws, though the at least 248 lost their lives during the strike. However, the farmers then came up continuing their protest with renewed demand, including MSP, justice to the victims of 2021 farmers protest and compensation for families of those who lost their lives back then.

Punjab farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal is on a fast-unto-death protest at Khanauri border. He has also filed a plea in the Supreme Court seeking legal backing for the MSP.

Recently, Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Welfare Bhagirath Choudhary claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has shown “special concern for farmers over the past 10 years, starting from 2014. “Whether it’s about providing equal treatment to farmers, increasing MSP, or addressing the various difficulties faced by farmers, he has made numerous efforts.”
