Shantanu Naidu who is a renowned entrepreneur and author is best known for his remarkable connection with the late Ratan Tata. Their unlikely friendship has been forged through their similar passions and values and has inspired countless individuals that they have often posted their photos of their friendship on social media platforms.
Shantanu Naidu was born in 1990 and grew up with a passion for entrepreneurship and pondered on making a social impact. He pursued his undergraduate studies in India before moving to the United States to earn his MBA from Cornell University’s Johnson Graduate School of Management (2016-2018).
Naidu’s journey with Ratan Tata began when he faced financial challenges with his startup, Motopaws, which creates reflective collars for stray dogs. His father suggested reaching out to Tata, a known dog lover. Naidu sent a handwritten letter to Ratan Tata and two months later, Tata responded by inviting him to Mumbai. This chance encounter blossomed into a meaningful friendship and mentorship between both of them.

As Tata’s assistant (2018-2024), Naidu worked closely with him on various philanthropic initiatives and business ventures. He played a key role in managing Tata’s office and supporting his charitable endeavours especially related to dogs and pets. In 2021, Naidu published his memoir, “I Came Upon a Lighthouse: A Short Memoir of Life with Ratan Tata,” chronicling their remarkable bond and friendship. The book offers a glimpse into their conversations, experiences, and shared values of their passion, compassion and admiration. Naidu currently resides in Mumbai and continues to be involved in various social and entrepreneurial pursuits to fulfil Ratan Tata’s dream as he stated on Instagram “I will spend the rest of my life trying to fill.”
Following Tata’s passing, Naidu expressed his grief on social media, saying, “The hole that this friendship has now left with me. Grief is the price to pay for love. Goodbye, my dear lighthouse.”
