OnePlus and Realme made a surprising move in India”s electronics market as they reportedly decided to halt the production and sales of smart televisions in the country. Times Of India reported that both companies have decided to exit the television business, citing extreme pressure on Chinese businesses. However, OnePlus and Realme will proceed with their smartphone operations in India.
Both companies had previously made significant investments in building their brands in the television sector. According to a Business Insider report, 4.5 million televisions were shipped to the country in the first half of 2023, a surge of 8 percent on a yearly basis. The wide availability of the internet and reasonable data rates are considered the main reasons for the rising popularity of smart TVs in India. Streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney Hotstar also play a vital role in this sector. According to Counterpoint Research”s data, India’s smart TV shipments grew 28% YoY in 2022.
OnePlus was one of the fastest-growing brands in the smart TV segment in 2022. As per the Counterpoint Research, the brand even captured the second position in the below-Rs 30,000 price segment. While OnePlus and Realme made their surprise exits, India”s TV sales have recently witnessed decent growth. The ongoing cricket World Cup and the festive season sales across e-commerce platforms are the main reasons for the increase in TV sales. Xiaomi, the main competitor of OnePlus and Realme, continues to lead India’s smart TV market. Brands such as LG, Samsung, and Sony also have a strong presence in the smart television market in India.
