“Managing Worker” and Chairman of Sahara India Pariwar Subrata Roy died on Tuesday in Mumbai at the age of 75.
Roy suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest following an extended battle with complications arising from metastatic malignancy, hypertension, and diabetes, a company statement read.
Subrata Roy was admitted to Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhimbhai Ambani Hospital and Medical Research Institute (KDAH) on November 12, 2023 following a decline in health.
“His loss will be deeply felt by the entire Sahara India Pariwar. Saharasri ji was a guiding force, a mentor, and a source of inspiration for all who had the privilege to work alongside him. Details regarding last rites will be communicated in due course. Sahara India Pariwar is committed to upholding Saharasri”s legacy and will continue to honor his vision in driving our onganization,” the statement added.
Subrata Roy founded Sahara India Pariwar, as the Sahara Group is known as, in 1978.
Subrata Roy who was one of the favorite businessmen of the political circles in his prime, boasted about his friendships with Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan and regularly mingled with notable figures like former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
The extravagant wedding ceremony of Mr. Roy”s two sons — Sushanto Roy and Seemanto Roy — in 2004 extended for almost two weeks, according to reports, earning the title of the Indian nuptial event of the century, and it certainly lived up to its billing. A staggering 10,000 guests, comprising a who”s who of India”s influential elite, were transported to Lucknow via specially chartered planes, according to reports. Among the attendees were prominent business tycoons, Bollywood luminaries, cricket sensations, and fashion icons. Even then Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee made a special appearance to bestow his blessings upon the newlyweds.
His Sahara India Pariwar, a multifaceted business conglomerate with interests spanning finance, real estate, media, and hospitality, under his leadership, grown into one of India”s largest and most diversified business entities, and in 2004, the group was termed by Time magazine as “the second largest employer in India after Indian Railways”.
Born on June 10, 1948, in Araria, Bihar, India, Roy”s journey from modest beginnings to becoming a business magnate is a testament to his entrepreneurial acumen.
