Sleep Champion, a bizarre sleep internship program organised by a Bangalore-based start-up, Wakefit, has been drawing people’s interest with the lucrative reward the project offers just for sleeping.
Saishwari Patil, a classical dancer and an investment banker from Bengaluru, won the latest season three, bagging the first prize with a reward of Rs nine lakh for sleeping. Saishwari was one of the 12 sleep interns of the program.

Speaking about her experience at the internship, Saishwari says to get a champion, the participant should be a disciplined sleeper and has to maintain consistent wake-up and sleep times.
“COVID disrupted my routine, and I was sleeping irregularly. My career as an auditor also demanded long hours. This internship taught me to be a disciplined sleeper,” The Hindu quoted the winner.
Recalling the mental state during the competition, Saishwari said her goal was to stay relaxed and present in the moment, given the fact that how can one prepare to sleep like one prepares for the examination?

The sleep champion program is designed for people who love to sleep, and and it gives them an opportunity to turn their liking into something a lucrative one. During the two-month internship, the participants would be required to sleep in their beds diligently for at least eight to nine hours every night. The participants would be provided with a premium mattress, and a contactless sleep tracker would be used to monitor their sleep patterns. The program also encourages the participants to take an additional 20-minute power nap during the day.
The perks for the selected interns for many people’s dream job include a guaranteed stipend of Rs. 1 lakh, in addition to getting the opportunity to be the sleep champion by securing the topper position, earning up to Rs 10 lakh.
The program has drawn over 10 lakh registrations across three seasons, with intenrs earning a total of 63 lakhs so far collectively.
Notably, though the program seems like a piece of cake for the sleep loving guys, it requires strict adherence to a sleep schedule and participation in sleep-related activities. Talking about the program, Kunal Dubey, the Chief Marketing Officer of Wakefit, says the sleep internship program is the company’s tongue-in-cheek way to rekindle India’s relationship with sleep by incentivising the interns with a stipend.
