“8 Rupees For Chutney?”: Kochi Vlogger’s Post On 'Hungry Mrinal' Sparks Debate On Extra Charges
Kochi, Kerala: A local food vlogger’s viral social media post about being charged ₹8 for an extra portion of coconut chutney at a popular Kochi eatery, Hungry Mrinal, has stirred a lively online debate about restaurant pricing and customer expectations.
The restaurant, owned by well-known food influencer Mrinal Das, is located in Edappally and Thrippunithura and has gained a loyal following for offering “good food for everyone,” particularly catering to the middle-class crowd.
But earlier this week, fellow food content creator Roaming Foodie shared a receipt and experience on Instagram where he claimed he was surprised to be charged ₹8 for chutney, typically considered a complimentary side dish in Kerala’s local eateries. The post quickly gained traction, with users divided on whether the charge was justified.

Social media users questioned the restaurant’s ‘middle-class friendly’ branding, asking why a basic item like coconut chutney would cost ₹8 if the eatery truly caters to the common man.

Some netizens defended the restaurant, drawing comparisons to chains like KFC or McDonald’s, where extra sauces are billed. “When KFC charges for an extra dip, nobody protests. But when a local outlet does the same, people question it,” one comment read.

Supporters of the restaurant pointed out that charging for extras might help reduce food waste. “Chutney is often wasted when served in bulk for free. Charging a small amount might ensure it’s only requested when needed,” another customer argued.
Mrinal has not issued an official statement, but regular patrons suggest the pricing has always been transparent and displayed at the counter.
Others in the food community have noted that many budget eateries across Kerala have begun placing nominal charges for extra sides like chutney, sambhar, and papadam in recent years.
