Tamil Nadu to Surpass Gujarat in Installed Wind Power Capacity by End of 2023

Tamil Nadu is set to reclaim the top position in installed wind power capacity in India, surpassing Gujarat by the end of 2023. The state plans to increase its installed wind power capacity by 5,000 MW by then.

Tamil Nadu currently has an installed wind power capacity of 10,225 MW, while Gujarat has an installed capacity of 10,890 MW. However, Tamil Nadu has a number of projects in the pipeline, and is expected to overtake Gujarat within the next few months.

The state is also considering repowering old wind turbines to increase their efficiency. This would further help Tamil Nadu to increase its wind power capacity and reduce its reliance on fossil fuels.

The state”s energy secretary, Beela Rajesh, made the announcement at the Windergy conference and trade fair in Chennai on Thursday. She said that 4,400 MW of the new wind power capacity would be installed by private players, while the remaining 600 MW would be an expansion of existing projects.

Beela Rajesh also said that Tamil Nadu”s success in wind power is due to the participation of its people. She said that about 65% of the wind energy produced in the state is for captive use, or is sold directly to other industries. The state utility, Tangedco, buys only 35% of the wind power produced in Tamil Nadu.

India has set a target of achieving 500 gigawatts (GW) of installed renewable energy capacity by 2030. Wind power is a key part of this target, and Tamil Nadu is playing a leading role in developing this renewable energy source.
