Year Ender 2023: The Number Of Equity Market Investors In India Soars 22.4%

According to data by the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the number of stock market investors in India grew by 22.4 percent this year, helping the benchmark indices Nifty50 and BSE Sensex hit record highs consecutively.

The highest growth in the number of registered investors was seen in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh, with a rise of 36.6 percent, 33.8 percent, and 28.9 percent, respectively. The performance of Bihar is noteworthy, as the state started from a relatively lower base.

Maharashtra has the largest investor pool with over 1.4 crore registered investors as of December 25 which is an increase of 16.9 percent followed by Uttar Pradesh which surpassed Gujrat to secure 2nd position with 89.5 lakhs active investors while Gujrat held 76.5 lakhs investors.

Overall, the number of total registered investors in India reached to over 8.49 crore as of December 25, up 22.4% from last year. The rise was on the back of online apps, increased financial literacy, data explosion in social media, especially trading tutorial featured by YouTube channels etc.

The country”s market capitalization has crossed $4 trillion in 2023 and is now ranked fourth in the world, behind the US, China, and Japan.
