Andhra Pradesh Proposes Removal of Inter 1st Year Board Exams And Revision Of Syllabus

Board of Intermediate Education, Andhra Pradesh (BIE AP) proposes to abolish intermediate first year public exams and conduct only second year exams. It aims to achieve equivalence with other boards including CBSE and other state boards, which do not have board exams for class 11. Notably, only Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are conducting board exams for Inter 1 year.

After considering the suggestions and recommendations of the students, parents, educators and other stakeholders, the Board of Intermediate Education, Andhra Pradesh has proposed multiple educational reforms.

The proposed reforms aims to alleviate board exams pressure on students and to enable them to focus on building strong conceptual foundation in Inter 1st year, which is essential for Inter 2nd year. The proposal also seeks to enhance student’s performance for the competitive exams such as JEE, NEET and others.

The BIEAP said that the inter 1st year exam will be held internally by the junior colleges based on the syllabus and blueprint given by the BIE, while the AP Inter 2nd year board exams will be conducted by BIE based on Inter 2nd year syllabus.

The board said that most of the colleges and universities consider only class 12 exams as qualifying criteria for admissions and inter first year exam results are not considered for admission procedure.

According to the BIE AP, no revisions were made to the AP Inter syllabus for the last few years and there was a need to bring in revision of syllabus and text books. A total of 14 committees were formed for syllabus revision plan.

It is also proposed to make a second language subject as elective and introduce additional subject to provide more options to the students.

BIE also propose to realign the subject-wise total marks and weightage for theory exams and internal/practical exams similar to the CBSE pattern. It is also proposed to introduce one-mark questions in the form of multiple choice questions (MCQs), fill in the blanks and one word answers in the board examination. The weightage of Essay type questions will also be reduced from eight marks to five-six marks.

Suggestions and feedbacks on the proposed reforms are asked by the board by January 26 on the email id at biereforms@gmail.com.
