Board Exams Twice A Year: Education Ministry

Edited by Dileep Kumar S

According to the new curriculum framework announced by the Union education ministry, board exams will be held twice a year. The new curriculum framework for school education has been developed in line with the National Education Policy announced by the government in 2020.

The framework suggests that students will be allowed to retain the best score out of the two board exams they attend in a year. It also mentions that the exams will assess the understanding and achievement of competencies rather than coaching and memorization.

“Board exams will be offered at least twice a year to ensure students have enough time and opportunity to perform well. Students can then appear for a board exam in subjects they have completed and feel ready for. They will also be allowed to retain the best score,” the ministry said.

The framework has also said that the choice of subjects in classes 11 and 12 will not be restricted to any streams (arts, science, commerce, and humanities) to give students flexibility in choosing their subjects.

Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that the new curriculum framework was prepared by a steering committee under the guidance of Dr. Kasturirangan.

The steering committee submitted the framework to the government, which then gave it to the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). The NCERT then formed two committees to study the recommendations of the steering committee: the National Oversight Committee and the National Syllabus and Textbook Committee (NSTC).

“We expect both these committees to prepare a syllabus that meets the needs of the 21st century and is based on original Indian thinking. We want them to prepare futuristic teaching and learning materials for classes 3 to 12. The first orientation meeting took place today. We are confident that at a time when the world is expecting a lot from India, and when the Prime Minister has shown the nation the dream of Amrut Kal, the new textbooks will meet those requirements,” the minister said.
