
Cambridge Doctoral Student Shares Her Struggles To Find Job After 70+ Rejections
A Cambridge PhD student, Marika Niihori has faced over 70 rejections and still struggling to find employment. Niihori has a Ph.D. in Physics from the prestigious University of Cambridge, however, failed to land in the market despite having a successful career.
Marika has shared the ordeal of job hunting on Instagram, where her journey has served an inspiration for many in the similar situation. After four years of hard work, Marika has earned a PhD Degree in Phyics from the Cambridge University.

While sharing her experience Marika wrote that she did not expect to take a career break after completing a PhD. She thought that completing a PhD would bring clarity to her future. “But having the flexibility and privilage to take some time off has been a blessing in disguise”, she said.
Marika has struggled for months after facing more than 70 rejections along the way. “I did not expect the job search to be his tough”, she writes. Marika thought that PhD degree will open so many doors but the reality was different, she said.
The London-based Cambridge Alumna battles loneliness as she went about her job hunt and brings excessive pressure for being compared with friends.

However, Marika acknowledged being privileged enough to afford a break. Last week, the Cambridge scholar finally managed to land a job in a biotech startup.

One user wrote, “I finished my PhD in November and been feeling lost ever since… Doing a job that I absolutely have to do which pays barely above minimum wage… I had some progress with job applications.. It will shine 1% brighter every day”.
