The Union Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan, announced to set up three AI Centres of Excellence (CoEs) in New Delhi. These centres will focus on key sectors including healthcare, agriculture, and sustainable cities. Per the Ministry of Education, each CoE will be led by top institutions in partnership with industries and startups.
The initiative will be implemented over five years with a total financial budget of Rs 990 crore. These centres were announced under para 60 of the budget announcement in 2023-24 as a part of the vision ‘Make AI in India and Make AI work for India’.
AIIMS and IIT Delhi will lead the healthcare CoE, IIT Ropar will head the agriculture AI centre and the sustainable cities initiative will be spearheaded by IIT Kanpur.

The Education Minister said that three AI-CoEs would emerge as global centres of public good and mark a significant step in the global AI landscape. He further added that these Centres of Excellence will become key elements of global public policy and solution providers to the world.
