Elon Musk Shares Meme On Scrapping The Department Of Education; Draws Criticism

Tesla CEO Elon Musk shared a meme showing the death of the US Department of Education with President Donald Trump’s image on it. The meme did not go well with the citizens who favored the Department of Education’s support for education.

Education is primarily a state and local responsibility in the United States. Almost 92 percent of the funds come from non-federal sources and only about 8 percent comes from the Federal government at elementary and secondary levels. ED targets its funds where it can do the most good.

Notably, the Department of Education (ED) was established in 1980 by Congress as a Cabinet-level agency. The department’s programs serve over 50 million students attending over 1 million schools. Also, more than 12 million postsecondary students were provided grants, loans, and work-study assistance.

Users showed their discontent over scrapping the department and criticized Musk for sharing the meme. “The department of education should be something we care deeply about. Our country is in deep trouble”, one user wrote.

Another user showing concern over the removing US department of education and called it a tool to assert more control by powerful and rich.

The Trump administration has proposed to dismantle the US Department of Education, which is opposed by a significant majority of Americans. In a new nationally representative poll commissioned by New America, a significant majority of Americans have voiced opposition to the Trump administration’s proposal to eliminate the US Department of Education.

The proposal shifts the responsibilities of the Education Department to other federal agencies. The US education department plays a critical role in overseeing key programs like Pell Grants and student’ loans.
