Family Of Student Died In Canada Seeks EAM S Jaishankar’s Assistance

Shaik Muzammil Ahmed, 25, pursuing a Master”s Degree in IT at Conestoga College in Kitchener City, Ontario, died unexpectedly due to cardiac arrest. Ahmed’s family is seeking assistance from External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to bring his mortal remains to his hometown in Hyderabad.

The family informed via a letter addressed to the EAM Jaishankar that Ahmed had been suffering from fever for the past week and died today due to cardiac arrest. His family received the information via a phone call from his friend. The grieving family is in a state of shock and requested EAM S Jaishankar to ask HCI Ottawa and CGI Toronto to bring back his mortals to them.

Amjad Ullah Khan, a local leader of Telangana-based political party Majlis Bachao Tehreek shared the news on X.

Notably, according to the information provided by the Ministry of External Affairs, at least 403 international students from India died between 2018 and 2023 while studying in countries around the world. With 91 deaths in Canada only, it represents more than one-fifth of the total deaths abroad followed by the U.K. with 48, Russia at 40, U.S. at 36, and Australia at 35.

According to the reports from MEA, Canada is the second most visited country by Indian students to study abroad.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) showed concerns over the vulnerability of international students. In the past EAM, S Jaishankar has said that the welfare of Indian Students abroad is one of the foremost priorities of the Government of India. Indian missions and posts remain vigilant and closely monitor the well-being of students studying abroad.
