Galgotias University Files Higher Patents Than IITs; Only 2 Were Granted In Last Five Years
The patent data of the last five years shows that the private institutes filed a larger number of patents, but the success rate remained minimal. The success rate for patent grants remained higher for the public institutes than the private ones.
The success rate of patents remained highest for IISc with 46.5%, followed by IITs with 42.8% and NITs with 40.7%. The Patent papers filed remained for: Indian Institute of Science (723), IITs (collectively – 6,558), and NITs (Collectively – 2,333). The total granted patents were at 336, 2806, and 949, respectively, in the last five years from 2020 to 2025.
Whereas, Chandigarh Group of Colleges, along with Jain (Deemed) University, Bengaluru, and Galgotia University, Noida, remained at worst with only 0.6%, 0.6%, and 0.08% success rate of patent grants.
Out of the total patents filed by Chandigarh Group of Colleges (2,852), along with Jain (Deemed) University, Bengaluru (2,840), and Galgotia University, Noida (2,233), only 17, 17, and 2 were granted.
Greater Noida’s private university, Galgotias University, has come under severe scrutiny after showcasing a Robodog ‘Orion’ claiming it was manufactured by the centre of excellence facility of the university. However, later the claim was rejected once online users later identified the machine as the Go2 mode made by the Chinese firm Unitree Robotics, which is commercially available starting at about 200,000 rupees.
