IIT Bombay Launches Cybersecurity Tool Vajra

IIT Bombay launched cybersecurity tool Vajra, an endpoint management, detection and response tool, during a ‘Cybersecurity for Critical Infrastructure’ workshop.

With Vajra, the research group at IIT Bombay aims to set a tone for pushing the envelope of innovation in high tech domains like cyber security, officials say. Its ability lies in gathering fine-grained contextual information in real time to detect malicious activities.

Project Vajra is an indigenously developed endpoint security system at IIT Bombay which embodies the characteristics of the celestial Vajra, one of the most powerful Indian mythological weapons. As per the information available, with a set of high defensive and offensive capabilities against cyber threat, Vajra aims to provide cost effective solution to organizations to defend against the cyber-attacks.

The tool aims to improve cyber security inclusion in the country by confining the data storage and processing within the confines of the national boundary informs the Vajra official website. Its inbuilt detection rules include the tactics, techniques and procedures of MITRE ATT&CK frame and allow new rules without creating any disruptions.

An effective endpoint defence can only be achieved if the system has “visibility, extensibility, and openness” at its core, since cyber attackers are always coming up with new techniques. Vajra tool is a mix of visibility extensibility and openness, informs IITB.

Prof. Manjesh Kumar Hanawal lead the team at IIT Bombay to develop the cyber-security tool. The Technocraft Centre for Applied Artificial Intelligence (TCA2L) IIT Bombay and NCETIS and CDSL Lab sponsored the programme.

SS Sarma, CEH scientist, from India CERT and Tulika Pandey, scientist G senior director from Meity, GoI attended the launch event as the Key Speaker and Chief Guest, respectively.
