Prof. Thalappil Pradeep, faculty at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras is elected to the United States National Academy of Engineering (NEA) via a professional distinction accorded to engineers. He became the 23rd foreign member from India to be elected to the Academy.

The IIT Professor is elected to one of the highest professional recognitions for his contributions to cluster chemistry and for the discovery and implementation of affordable solutions for drinking water. According to the official information, Prof. Pradeep will be formally inducted to the designation during the NAE’s annual meeting on September 29, 2024.

Election to the National Academy of Engineering is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. Those who have distinguished themselves in “engineering research, practice, or education” are recognized with an Academy membership.

Prof. Thalappil Pradeep is an institute chair professor and has been honoured with Padma Shri for his distinguished services to the field of science. Along with this Prof. Pradeep has also received the Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar prize, TWAS prize in Chemistry, and JC Bose National Fellowship among other recognitions.

Apart from providing his service at IIT Madras held visiting positions at Purdue University, Leiden University (Netherlands), EPFL (Switzerland), Institute of Chemistry (Taiwan), Pohang University of Science and Technology (South Korea), and the University of Hyogo (Japan).

The National Academy of Engineering (NAE), founded in 1964, is a private, independent, nonprofit institution in the field of engineering in the United States. According to the information available on the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) webpage, 114 new members and 21 international members are announced to be part of the institution this year. This brings the total U.S. membership to 2,310 and the number of international members to 332.

Notably IIT Madras has been ranked at number 1 position in the overall and engineering categories and positioned at number 2 in Research and Innovation under the NIRF ranking 2023 announced by the Ministry of Education.
