Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in its new manual prohibits putting up wall posters, staging dharnas or protests within 100 meters of the academic building. As per the revised Chief Proctor Office (CPO) manual, breaking of this rule can result in fines amounting to Rs 20,000 or expulsion.

Previously, as per a High Court order, organising protests within 100 meters of the administrative blocks, which houses the offices of the Vice- Chancellor, Registrar, Proctors and many others were prohibited.

The recent manual was in the light of an incident in October wherein “anti-national” slogan found on a building wall and following administration announced to formulate a committee to probe into the repeated instances of similar nature on the campus.

Meanwhile, the JNU Students” Union (JNUSU) expressed their opposition to the new rules, and cited it as an attempt to stifle vibrant campus culture, and demands immediate revocation, PTI reports as the student”s union said. However, JNU registrar Ravikesh did not evoke any response in this regard.

The updated rules, approved by the Executive Council permits Vice-Chancellor or the competent authority power to determine punishable acts if they are identified in breach of the university”s discipline and conduct. Besides, they have the authority to turn down, change or validate the punishment if they considered fit.
