NCERT Introduces Holistic Progress Cards To Assess Foundational Learning Of Students

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has come up with an innovative method of analysis of the wards learning at foundational stages. Under the new assessment methodology, students in the early stages of education will get feedback from teachers, parents, and friends.

Under the new Assessment method, a Holistic Progress Card (HPC) will be prepared for the analysis of the foundational stage of learning. The HPC is devised by Performance Assessment, Review, and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development (PARAKH), a standard-setting body under the NCERT. The progress cards are following the National Education Policy 2020.

As per the information, HPCs for the foundational stage (Classes 1 and 2), preparatory stage (Classes 3 to 5) and middle stage (Classes 6 to 8) have already been prepared and for the Secondary Stage, they are under progress of development.

The HPCs were delivered to all states and Union Territories in September 2023 after PARAKH had created them for students up to Class 8. The NCERT requested that they either adopt the HPCs or modify them to meet their regional requirements.

How Holistic Progress Card will be prepared?

Under this students’ yearly performance will not be evaluated based on the marks in the established examination procedure rather a comprehensive approach is taken to analyze individual learning.

The Holistic Progress Card will include student’s interest in different activities including reading, dancing, sports, yoga, art and craft, creative writing etc. Under the new progress card, the self-analysis power of students will be supported by asking them about their interests and favorite things to be included in their self-assessment. Here, schools’ attendance will also be counted as the reason for the low attendance.

The HPC will analyse the student’s learning in multiple domains such as Domain 1- Physical Development where students performance will be scrutinized on parameters of health and fitness. Students” awareness, sensitivity, and creativity will be assessed through this domain. In Domain 2, the Socio-emotional development of children will be checked through emotional intelligence parameters, social service, and positive outlook towards the environment.

The next domain is to analyze Cognitive Development by observing logical thinking and numerical understanding of students. In Domain 4 the language and literacy development of students will be measured via reading and writing skills. Under Domain 5, the Aesthetic and Cultural Development of students will be evaluated through performance and visual arts. The Domain 5.1 will include the positive learning habits of students.

Every domain will be evaluated by feedback given by teachers, students’ remarks, parents” observations, and friends” assessments.

How the HPCs will benefit the development of students?

The NEP 2020 states that by sharing students” strengths and opportunities for growth, the HPC helps them become more self-aware and self-esteeming.  It will encourage competency-based evaluation and all-encompassing development by supporting the transition from summative to formative assessment. It will also provide parents and instructors with knowledge to help each student learn.
