Nirmala Sitharaman Inaugurates New BITS Pilani Campus In Mumbai

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated the new BITS Pilani campus in Kalyan, Mumbai. This is the 5th campus of the storied educational institution which hosts three schools including BITS School of Management, BITS Law School, and BITS School of Design.

As per the information provided, the campus is being built with an investment of Rs 1500 crores and will host about 5,000 students when it”s fully functional. BITSoM and BITS Law School are already functional while the BITS Design School will admit the first batch of students this year.

In line with the National Education Policy, 2020, the new development makes the BITS Pilani system to become more multi-disciplinary than most of the top institutions in the country.

While congratulating Kumar Mangalam Birla, the Chancellor of BITS Pilani, Seetharaman, applauded the education standard set by the institution in providing the ability and skilling students to get readily recruited and be an inspiration.

Reflecting on her satisfaction over the scholarships provided by the institute, the finance minister said, it is immensely satisfying to know that ₹125 crore has been given as scholarships not by the government but in-house by the Institution.

Pointing towards recommendations by the Western leaders for India to be more supportive in terms of provision of scholarships to boost the education sector, she mentioned, “Most often we are lectured by the Western leaders that India should have a culture of charity. I thoroughly disagree with them with an example of the Institution (BITS Pilani) I’m standing here. It promotes good education, funds the needy students, and sets a good example of various other charitable work they (Birla Group) have done over the generations.”

She also wished the fifth campus to continue with the tradition of high-quality education for the aspiring Indian youth.

Recently, BITS Pilani was in the news over an email from the institute Dean seeking help from alumni for placements, where Vice Chancellor V. Ramgopal Rao clarified that this has been blown out of proportion. It should be a very normal thing for institutions such as BITS and IITs to reach out to alumni for placements. He had done this even in the past in his role as Director, of IIT Delhi. This is needed even to improve placement opportunities for students, he informed.
