Owaisi Declares Solidarity With AMU Students' Protest Against Sudden 35-40% Fee Hike
Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Sunday expressed his “complete solidarity” with the students of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). The students at the prestigious central university have been in the streets taking out several protest marches against the administration demanding the withdrawal of the ‘unjust fee hike’.
Backing the students’ protest, the Hyderabad MP demanded that the university must rollback its fee hike at the earliest, underlining that many of the AMU’s students come from very poor families and backward regions.

“A 35%-40% increase in fees is unbearable for them,” Owaisi wrote in a post on X.

In recent days, AMU students have alleged that the university administration permitted the UP police to enter the campus and unleash physical force against the protesting students along with the proctorial team. The authorities, the students say, thus used intimidation and coercion to suppress students protest carried out by democratic means, demanding reasonable rights .

The university has reportedly brought about a sudden 35–40% fee hike as registration and continuation fee, which is seen as utterly devastating for students from low-income families. The students say the fee hike is against the principles of the university’s founder and educationalist, Sir Sayyid Ahmed Khan, and his legacy, as it would make education inaccessible to talented individuals.
It is said that the financial situation of the university is getting worse, prompting the administration to take steps, but putting the whole burden on students, instead of any government interventions, questions the university’s basic foundation goals.
AMU has made the fee hike after 15 years, and universities such as Jamia Millia Islamia have also raised course fees for the 2025-26 academic year.
