The University Grant Commission (UGC) has announced a new ‘Curriculum and Credit Framework for Post-Graduate Programmes’. The framework includes the credits and academic structure for one, and two-year PG programs without requiring any specific discipline entry requirements. The new framework also offers an option to exit from the course after completing one year in the two-year program.
UGC Chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar said that flexibility and mobility are the hallmarks of the new curriculum and credit framework. The new framework is in accordance with the National Education Policy 2020, which allows the opportunity to experience a holistic and multidisciplinary education as per the choices of the student.

Key highlights of the PG curriculum framework
- Gives the flexibility to move from one discipline to another while studying
- Provides an opportunity for learners to select the courses of their interest
- Offer flexibility to those who qualify UG with a major or minor to chose for either major or minor or any other subject upon proving competency in PG program
- Students can switch to alternative modes of learning including offline, ODL, Online learning and hybrid modes of learning
- Mobility and flexibility will be according to the UGC Regulations 2021 and UGC guidelines for multiple entry and exit in HEIs
The Higher Education Institutions will have the flexibility to offer different designs of PG programs such as one-year PG, two-year PG, and an integrated 5-year program.
Curricular Components
- 1-year PG: Students entering 1-year PG after a 4-year UG programme can choose to do (i) only coursework or (ii) research or (iii) coursework and research.
- For 2-year PG: Students entering 2-year PG after a 3-year UG programme can choose to do (i) only course work in the third and fourth semester or (ii) course work in the third semester and research in the fourth semester or (iii) only research in the third and fourth semester.
- 5-year Integrated Programme (UG+PG): At the PG level, the curricular component of 5- year integrated programme will be similar to that of 2-year PG mentioned above.
