The governor of West Bengal C V Ananda Bose approached the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to trace possible technology solutions to curb ragging within college and university campuses.
The initiative by Raj Bhavan was confirmed by an official statement issued on Thursday evening.
The government will be seeking expert advice from scientist of ISRO to develop a suitable technological solution to control and prevent ragging. If not controlled, ragging often leads the victim students to dreadful mental traumas, psychological or physical torture, and even to suicides and murders.
Earlier on this month, a student died after allegedly ragged and sexually harassed in a hostel in West Bengal. The victim was a first-year undergraduate student at the Jadavpur University in Bengal. 13 people, including present and former students of the university, were arrested in the following investigations.
The incident brought widespread outrage and protest throughout the state, and it now forced the Bengal government to the urgent implementation of a new anti-ragging scheme in collaboration with the national space organisation.
“C V Ananda Bose, Hon”ble Governor of West Bengal and Chancellor of the universities contacted the Chairman of ISRO for identifying appropriate technology to effectively contain and eliminate the menace of ragging in the university campuses”, says the statement released on Thursday from Raj Bhavan.
According to the Mint, Mr Bose has also extended his efforts by engaging with a Hyderabad-based firm to explore technological solutions for the problem.
The endeavour integrates video analytics, image matching, automatic target recognition, and remote sensing capabilities, and will develop a suitable technology solution. These are expected to contribute significantly to the prevention and reduction of ragging incidents.
