Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi on Friday promised that if her party returns to power in Chhattisgarh, the government will build ten lakh new houses for the homeless, and will conduct caste census in the state on Bihar pattern.
Addressing ‘Panchayat Mahasammelan’ in Kanker district, Ms. Gandhi praised the Chhattisgarh government for the unprecedented and unparallel progress in the state, and said ‘Chhattisgarh Model’ is emerging as a new model of development with its special focus on rural areas.
She said, decentralisation of power by strengthening the local government units like panchayats was the tradition with the Congress, from Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru to Rajiv Gandhi. Ms Gandhi praised the Chhattisgarh government for strengthening the panchayats in the state. Compared to that, she alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party had weakened the Panchayati Raj institutions in the states ruled by it.
Praising the Chhattisgarh government for its people-friendly welfare schemes, she said, 40 lakh people had come out of poverty during the last five years of the Congress rule. While acknowledging that the farmers in Chhattisgarh were getting the best and maximum prices for their crops, she dismissed the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s claim that the reason for the better price was central government and to prove that she cited the condition of farmers in BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh.
Ms Gandhi, then, alleged that the BJP is only interested in grabbing power; they wanted to take away money from the poor and give it to a few billionaires and then take it from them and spend on elections. She then adds that, it is people who give you power not the money.
Adding further, she cautioned against the fake and hollow guarantees of the Prime Minister by comparing them with Chinese products, and asked what happened to these guarantees, since the country right now has the highest unemployment rate in the last 45 years.
Ms Gandhi also told the people that they can always cross check her guarantees in other states where Congress had won the elections. Once the people have their own interest and the interests of the state and the country in mind, they will vote for the Congress, she said.
