In the forthcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections, BJP’s Mumbai unit chief Ashish Shelar will contest from Bandra West (Vandre West) assembly segment for the third time. He has been representing the assembly segment since 2014.
Shelar is a long time associate of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the ideological fountainhead of the BJP. During his college days, he got connected to the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and then rose to the position as its Mumbai unit secretary. In 2012, Shelar got appointed as Maharashtra Legislative Council and exercised the role till 2014.

In his maiden assembly elections in 2014, Shelar defeated Congress candidate Baba Ziauddin Siddique by a margin of 26,911 votes in Bandra West. In 2019 elections, he maintained his position by defeating Congress candidate Asif Ahmed Zakaria by a margin of 26,507 votes.
Shelar handled the ministerial portfolios such as School Education, Sports and Youth Welfare during the Devendra Fadnavis administration in 2019.
Aside from them, he has held important positions like Mumbai Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) chief, BMC Corporator (Khar West), North West Mumbai district BJP President, and member of Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

As a sports enthusiast, Shelar’s contribution for the development of sports in Mumbai is also particularly significant. In June 2015, he got elected as the Vice President of Mumbai Cricket Association and in January 2017, he became the President of the Association. Besides, he has helmed the Mumbai District Football Association, and served as Vice President of the Rajasthan Sports Club, and the treasurer of the BCCI.
The 288 Assembly seats in Maharashtra will go to polls on November 20.
As election dates are coming closer, the Mahayuti alliance and Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) are engaged in intense poll preparations. The Maharashtra Assembly elections mark the first after the Shiv Sena and NCP parties split in June 2022 and July 2023, respectively.
