Assam Assembly Election Results 2026 (Live): BJP Leads In Assam; BOPF, INC Follows

The wait is over for the “Gateway to the Northeast” as the counting of votes for the 126 seat Assam Legislative Assembly began today, May 4, 2026. Following a high-octane single-phase election held on April 9, all eyes are on whether Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma can secure a third consecutive term for the BJP-led NDA.

As per the early trends by the Election Commission of India (ECI), Himanta Biswa Sarma headed BJP, is running ahead in Assam. The early trends are based on the postal ballot figures. The results are likely to be finalised by 2 pm today. BJP, under the leadership of Biswa Sarma, is looking for a third straight term in the state.

Currently, the BJP is ahead on 39 seats, with the INC on 11, the BOPF at 6, the AGP at 3, ASMJTYP with 3.

Assam recorded a massive 85.17% voter turnout, the highest in its last four Assembly cycles, signaling a deeply engaged electorate. The Sirjangram constituency recorded the state’s highest turnout at a staggering 95.49%, while the capital region of Dispur saw a more modest 74.45%

All eyes are on CM Himanta Biswa Sarma (BJP), who faces Congress newcomer Bidisa Neog. Sarma has historically won this seat with massive margins.

A prestige battle for the Congress as MP Gaurav Gogoi looks to reclaim his family’s legacy seat from the BJP’s Hitendra Nath Goswami. Firebrand leader Akhil Gogoi (Raijor Dal) is defending his turf against a concerted push from the BJP to unseat the prominent anti-CAA voice. Also, Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia (Congress) is in a nail-biting contest in a seat his family has held for decades.

The BJP campaigned heavily on infrastructure and “double-engine” growth, while the United Opposition focused on the implementation of the CAA/NRC and the protection of indigenous “Asomiya” rights.

For the first time in years, the AIUDF (led by Badruddin Ajmal) is contesting outside the formal Congress alliance. This “triangular” split in minority-heavy districts like Dhubri and Barpeta could prove decisive for the NDA’s prospects.

This is the first election following the 2023 delimitation exercise, which reshaped several constituencies. Parties are still gauging how the new demographic boundaries will affect the final tally.
