Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has been advised by the Election Commission of India (ECI) regarding his comments directed towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi during public appearances. Sources indicate that the advisory was prompted by Gandhi”s remarks, including terms like “panauti” (bad omen) and “pickpocket” aimed at PM Modi.
Taking into consideration various factors, including the Delhi High Court”s order and Gandhi”s response, the ECI has advised him to exercise greater caution in his future statements. This advisory, dated March 1, emphasises that parties, candidates, and star campaigners should adhere strictly to the Model Code of Conduct, with the EC warning of severe consequences for any violations.
The EC also said that repeat offenders, including star campaigners and candidates who have previously received notices, will face stringent penalties for subsequent breaches of the model code. Last year, the EC issued a notice to Rahul Gandhi following his use of the terms “panauti” and “pickpocket” in reference to the Prime Minister.
Gandhi”s “pickpocket” remark, made during a speech prior to the Rajasthan election, alleged that while PM Modi diverted public attention, industrialist Gautam Adani was picking pockets. Subsequently, the EC issued a show cause notice to Gandhi, seeking an explanation for his comments.
The matter was also brought before the Delhi High Court, which urged the EC to address the notice issued to Gandhi, deeming his remarks made in November 2023 as inappropriate. In its show cause notice, the EC pointed out that the term “panauti” is prohibited under section 123(2) of the Representation of People Act, and emphasized the importance of refraining from baseless criticism as per the model code of conduct.
The notice further highlighted the serious nature of Gandhi”s comments, considering him a senior leader of a national political party, and urged him to maintain decorum and civility in his public discourse.
