Anil Vij, the BJP veteran and chief ministerial claimant has emerged victorious for another term from Ambala Cantt constituency as counting for the 90-member assembly nears end. Anil Vij had expressed his confidence in retaining his seats for seventh time, while staking claim to be the chief minister if the saffron party forms government for the third term. Anil Vij secured a margin of 7277 votes.
As counting ended, BJP emerged victorious, securing 48 seats while the Congress trailed behind with 37, diminishing the hope of the grand old party to form government in Haryana after a decade. The Congress, after failing a seat-sharing talk with AAP decided to contest the election in all 89 constituencies, leaving the one seat for the CPI(M).
The exit polls have also predicted a decent victory for the Congress party, noting the anti-incumbency, farmers’ protest and other issues including unemployment. Commenting on the result, Prime Minister Modi said lotus has bloomed in Haryana for the third time while the Congress refused to accept the poll outcome, alleging EVM issues.
