Devendra Bhuyar, the sitting MLA who successfully contested from the Morshi constituency as an independent candidate during the 2019 assembly elections, has been given a ticket by Ajith Pawar’s NCP from his sitting seat. He has been a strong supporter of the faction since the party split into two—Ajit Pawar’s and Sharad Pawar’s. The Ajit Pawar’s faction has named Bhuyar in its fourth list of candidates released on Tuesday.
During the 2019 assembly elections, Bhuyar defeated the BJP’s two-term MLA Anil Bonde, also the former Agriculture Minister of Maharashtra State and National General Secretary of BJP Kisan Morcha. Bhuyar officially joined the NCP in the presence of the party chief and Maharashtra deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar recently.

Notably, Bhuyar recently sparked a controversy when he said that beautify girls do not marry boys from the farming community, triggering criticism for derogatory remarks directed at the farmers and women. While speaking at a gathering in Warud tehsil earlier this month, the Morshi MLA said, “If a girl is beautiful, she will not like a person like you and me, but she will opt for a person having a job.”
The MLA went on to say that the girls who are at number two and who are somewhat less good-looking prefer someone who runs a grocery shop or paan Kiosk. “A number three girl would like [to marry] the son of a farmer,” the Morshi legislator said, underscoring that only girls from the bottom of the lot would marry a boy from a farming family. “The children of such marriage too lack good looks,” he added.

However, boasting about several developmental works he has done for his constituency, including in the health and educational sectors, Bhuyar hopes to retain the seat for another term as a Mahayuti candidate, which comprises the Shinde-led Shiv Sena, the BJP, and Ajit-Pawar’s NCP.
The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance, which is constituted by Congress, Sharad Pawar-led NCP, and Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena, is yet to announce its candidate from the constituency. Given the electoral history of the constituency, there will also be competent independent contestants vying from the seat. The elections for the 288-member assembly are scheduled for November 20, and the result will be declared on 23.
