Chandigarh Deputy Mayor elections: BJP’ Kuljeet Singh Sandhu Wins Senior Deputy Mayor Post

BJP candidate Kuljeet Singh Sandhu was elected as the senior Deputy Mayor of Chandigarh in the re-elections in Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. Kuljeet Singh Sandhu has defeated INDIA bloc candidate Gurpreet Singh Gabi. As the BJP emerged winner with 19 votes in the election, Congress-Aam Aadmi Party(AAP) alliance has received 16 votes. The remaining one vote declared invalid.

The re-election for the posts of senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation were held on today, March 4, 2024. On February 20, the apex Court has quashed the January 30 results of the Chandigarh mayor elections wherein the BJP candidate had came out as an unlikely winner. Following, the Supreme Court declared Congress-AAP alliance candidate Kuldeep Kumar as the new mayor.

However, when the time Court declared the verdict, the BJP was able to get three AAP councillors shift to its side, and increasing the party’s total strength in the 36-member Municipal House from 14 to 17. Meanwhile, the AAP has 10 members while the Congress has seven. The Shiromani Akali Dal has one councillor.

Besides, Chandigarh MP Kirron Kher, who is a BJP leader, also possess voting rights as an ex-officio member of the corporation.

The process for election for the two posts, senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor was conducted by Kuldeep Kumar, new Mayor as the presiding officer.

As per the pre-poll agreement between, AAP and Congress, the Mayor’s post will go to the former, and latter will contest candidates for the senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor. Thus, for the re-elections, Congress councillors Gurpreet Singh Gabi and Nirmala Devi represented for the posts of senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor, respectively. Meanwhile, the BJP has again fielded Kuljeet Singh Sandhu and Rajinder Sharma.
